Catalan is the official language of Catalonia. It is spoken fluently in all four Catalan provinces as well as in the Balearic Islands, the Community of Valencia, Andorra, in some small regions of Aragón and a in a few towns in France and Italy. It´s one of the most widely spoken languages in Europe, and is considered as valid as others such as danish, norwegian or greek.

It´s the official language of the Catalonian education system, spoken by over 90 percent of young people under the age of 30, and 75 percent of the total population. Due to its importance, all visual media and the news are transmitted entirely in Catalan. TV3 is the most important television chain and a pioneer in divulging the language across Catalonia. As far as radio is concerned it is Catalonia Radio that promotes its use.

Some words which are worth taking into account to familiarize ourselves with the language and to allow for a comfortable stay are:

Good morning: Bon dia;

Good evening: Bona tarda

Good night: Bona nit

Thank you: Merci

Please: Sisplau

Excuse me: Perdoni

Bye: Adéu

See you soon: Fins aviat
