The TV3 Marathon, more commonly known as “La Marató”, is a TV program that runs every year in Catalonia a few weeks before Christmas. Its aim is to raise funds to fight against a wide range of illnesses and diseases such as Cancer, Diabetes, Leukemia, Alzheimer’s and many more.

All money raised goes towards research and prevention. Furthermore, the program, (which runs for 15 consecutive hours) reaches an audience of three million viewers, which serves the complementary purpose of raising awareness about the illnesses it is raising money for.

Whilst the program is running, an endless variety of sporting, artistic and social activities take place in different towns and cities within Catalonia, which opens up participation to the whole population. Furthermore, CDs and books are released in collaboration with famous artists and writers. The first Marathon took place in 1992 at the time of the Barcelona Olympic Games and since then, the amount raised already exceeds 144 million euros.

Special mention goes out to the excellent work and efforts carried out by the staff at Corporación Catalana de Medios Audiovisuales joint with the Marató Foundation in addition to the huge generosity given by celebrities from every field who appear in the program or man the phone lines. Their contribution is truly laudable and has helped the event to turn into a Catalonian tradition.
