The postal system in Spain, called Correos (Mail), is up and running, however delivery times can vary widely. A letter by airmail to the US can take from four days to two weeks to reach its destination. Mail delivery to the UK may vary from overnight to four days.
Delivery to other places around the world is equally unpredictable. Sending letters by special delivery (Urgent) guarantees the sender a quicker delivery. Post offices are generally open from 8: 30 am to 8: 30 pm, Monday through Friday and from 10 am to 2:00 pm on a Saturday. Barcelona’s main post office is located in Antonio López Square at the end of Laietana Avenue and is open all day, from 8:30 am to 9:30 pm on weekdays and from 8:30 am to 2:30 pm on a Saturday.
Airmail letters to Australia, New Zealand, USA and Canada weighing up to 20 grams cost €0.90. Letters to the UK and other EU countries weighing up to 20 grams cost €0.75.
Postal rates are identical. An urgent sticker costs €2.84. Letters within Spain cost €0.37. You can buy stamps at post offices and authorized tobacconists.
The following are the main post offices in Barcelona:
Central Post Office and Telecomunications (n° 1 Antonio López Square, 08002.)
Office Carrer Arago (Arago 282, Eixample, Barcelona, Catalonia, 08007. 93/2160453. Passeig de Gràcia.)
Central “Correus i Telecomunicacions” (Office: n° 1 Antonio López square, Barri Gotic, Barcelona, Catalonia, 08002. 902/197197. www.correos.es. Jaume I.)
Do note that provincial postal addresses must include the name of the province between brackets, for example, Figueres (Girona). For deliveries within Barcelona, this step is not necessary.
When rapidity is essential or when you have to send valuables or documents, you can use a courier service (mensajero), even though it is expensive to ship items from Spain abroad, especially for an overnight delivery service.
Major international organizations such as Federal Express and UPS have offices in Spain; also the largest Spanish courier service, Seur, provides similar services and fees. The courier will pick up the package at your door step and will deliver it anywhere in the world, usually within one to three days. It is always better to call a day earlier to have your package collected by the next morning. You can also leave the package in a courier office. If the package is picked up before noon, usually it will arrive in New York or London the following day before 5 pm; delivery often takes more than one day to Australia or New Zealand. Prices range from € 20 to € 60, depending on the destination.
