Traditional Catalan cooking is based on produce from the local area which are rich in various crops, livestock and top quality fish fresh from the coast.  An essential element which is found throughout all types of Mediterranean cuisine is the use of olive oil in dressings, and in stews and fried foods.

Barcelona has a wide selection of restaurants that specialize in Catalonian cuisine. A few examples of typical dishes include: la butifarra con judías (sausages with beans), la calçotada, (grilled onions served with romesco sauce and eaten by hand), bread smothered in tomato  accompanied with sausages, ample rice, seafood and the always tasty “fideuá” (a seafood and pasta dish served with aioli).
